Frequently Asked Questions

Are they heavy?

Yes, our baking steels are solid and durable, ranging from 18-23 lbs, but their weight is what helps retain and distribute heat so effectively. If maintained well, they can be conveniently stored in the oven, minimizing the need for lifting and making them easy to use whenever you need them.

Will carbon steel rust?

Yes, like all high-quality carbon steel, our baking steel can rust if not properly cared for. However, with regular maintenance—such as keeping it dry, lightly oiling it after cleaning, and storing it in a dry place—you can easily prevent rust. If rust does appear, it can be removed with a scrubber and re-seasoned in the oven to restore its performance.

How hot can carbon steel go?

Carbon steel can withstand extremely high temperatures—up to 2,500°F (1371°C) before it begins to soften or degrade. In a home oven, it will typically reach 500–600°F (260–315°C), and it can handle even higher temperatures on a grill, broiler, or open flame without damage.

Where does the George name come from?

We’re a sister-owned cookware company and our brand name, George Cookware, is a tribute to our grandpa, and to his dad whose name was also George. He started a manufacturing company in the ’60s, which is where we are now creating our cookware.
